Cracked your phone screen? What to do before the repair
A cracked screen is annoying, but what you do in the first hours protects your hands and your data, and stops other parts getting damaged.
Protect your hands first
If the glass is cracked, cover it with clear tape or a temporary screen protector so glass splinters don't come off while you use it.
Back up now
If the display and touch still work, even partly, back up right away. Cracks can spread and touch can stop at any moment. The steps are in How to back up your phone before a repair.
Keep it away from water and pressure
- A cracked screen loses some of its water resistance, so keep the phone away from moisture.
- Don't press on the crack, and don't carry the phone in a tight pocket.
Black screen, but the phone still rings?
The fault is most likely the screen alone, and your data is still on the device. Once the screen is replaced, everything comes back as it was.
